This family lived trapped in a place meant to be temporary. Yet, their child kept growing anyway. So, they marked the growth milestones on the wall, because growth is a kind of defiance against despair. The world continued to narrow into a terrible place of waiting, shortages, and fear. Yet, the child still grew taller. Someone needed to notice that.
