There's no correct way to divide an insufficient amount of food. The adult isn't solving the hunger problem, only choosing how best to avoid disappointing either child. She anguishes over the choice, but she still makes it with great care. Even love is forced to become arithmetic when survival is at stake because numbers never forgive.
